TYPES OF DICTIONARIES

A dictionary is a collection of words in one or more specific languages, often alphabetically, with usage of information, definitions, etymologies, phonetics, pronunciations, translation, and other information. 
In a general dictionary, each word may have multiple meanings. Some dictionaries include each separate meaning in the order of most common usage while others list definitions in historical order, with the oldest usage first. a dictionary can be many type such as:

 

Specialized dictionaries
A specialized dictionary is a dictionary that focuses upon a specific subject field. for example, a business dictionary or a medical dictionary.

 

Defining dictionaries
A defining dictionary is a simplest dictionary, provides a vocabulary of the simplest meanings of the simplest concepts. From these, other concepts can be explained and defined. In English, the commercial defining dictionaries typically include only one or two meanings of fewer than 2000 words.

 

Bilingual dictionary
A bilingual dictionary or translation dictionary is a specialized dictionary used to translate words or phrases from one language to another.

 

Electronic dictionary
An electronic dictionary is a dictionary whose data exists in digital form and can be accessed through a number of different media. Electronic dictionaries can be found in several forms, including:
• as dedicated handheld devices
• as apps on smartphones and tablet computers or computer software
• as a function built into an E-reader
• as CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs, typically packaged with a printed dictionary, to be installed on the user’s own computer
• as free or paid-for online products

 

Encyclopedic dictionary
An encyclopedic dictionary typically includes a large number of short listings, arranged alphabetically, and discussing a wide range of topics. Encyclopedic dictionaries can be general, containing articles on topics in many different fields; or they can specialize in a particular field, such as art, biography, law, medicine, or philosophy. They may also be organized around a particular academic, cultural, ethnic, or national perspective. 

 

Monolingual learner's dictionary
A Monolingual learner's dictionary is a type of dictionary designed to meet the reference needs of people learning a foreign language. Dictionaries for learners include information on grammar, usage, common errors, collocation, and pragmatics, which is largely missing from standard dictionaries, because native speakers tend to know these aspects of language intuitively.

 

Advanced learner's dictionary
The advanced learner's dictionary is the most common type of monolingual learner's dictionary, that is, a dictionary written for someone who is learning a foreign language and who has a proficiency level of B2 or above according to the Common European Framework. It differs from a bilingual or translation dictionary, on the one hand, and a standard dictionary written for native speakers or linguistic scholars, on the other. The definitions are usually built on defining vocabulary. for example oxford advance learner’s dictionary. 

 

Phonetic dictionary
A phonetic dictionary is a dictionary that allows a speaker to locate words by the "way they sound". by studing a phonetic dictionary one can sound like more native. 

 

Rhyming dictionary
A rhyming dictionary is a specialist dictionary designed for use in writing poetry and lyrics.

 

Reverse dictionary
The reverse word dictionary is a dictionary where the word entries in the dictionary are not alphabetized in the same manner as a traditional dictionary. 

 

Visual dictionary
A visual dictionary is a dictionary that primarily uses pictures to illustrate the meaning of words.
